Aspects Of Performance
The video of Smile By Lilly Allen is performance based due to the video being set around the artist and she is also used and is shown as singing to the camera.

The mode of address is directive as she only looks and sings into the character she is telling the story of the video to the audience and includes them.
Narration
The majority of the narrative is linear however at the beginning there is a flash back to how the couple used to be which shows that it is non linear. There is a clear beginning middle and end as the story consists of her trying to get her own back secretly after he has done something bad to her leaving him dependent on her.
How the video displays the artist
The video shows her as rebellious who wants to seek revenge and think this is the only option to solve problems which can portray her as having a fiery character. She is also shown as ordinary and as more of a chav than superficial and shows that she has the same problems as everyone else she is also seen as being strong.

The visual elements that are used is in the format of amplification as it shows a consequence that goes beyond the lyrics.

The mise en scene used shows her in a dress and earings and trainers which is very iconic with Lilly Allen as she wears similar outfits in her videos this is her trademark. This also shows her as ordinary, there is use of youths wearing tracksuits this shows its following their label. This also shows that the video is modern and that they are unwealthy. Many locations are used however the most common is the cafe and the flat which shows that she is very normal.
Camera Use
The use of camera used are closeups to show emotion mid shot to show how the youths are acting, the zoom and extreme close up to create emphasis, tracking to show her walking, two shot to emphasis that they are having a conversation and that they have equal status however there is a high angled shot at the end explaining she now is dominant. The point of view shot is also used which shows what the character is seeing.
Editing
The editing used is match on action which is often used to show someone walking, a shot reverse shot which shows that there is conflict the pace is also sped up to increase the beat. The editing also matches the beat which the music is in.
Special Effects
The special effects which are used is black and white to show that the artist is trying to create an image of the flat being as through a camera. There is use of short cuts in the format of a montage to show a long period of time in a short video.
Genre
The genre is pop as it is very happy and upbeat as the lyrics are catchy.

The audience is teenagers due to Lilly Allen being young and is likely to be shown on Smash Hits and The Box.
