Evaluation

The final promotional package of the song Cell Mate created by Parazali develops the conventions of a music video by involving a linear narrative due to the video enlightens a story from the beginning to end. Lip synching which is used in the video connotes the performance and is an addition to original conventions. Locations chosen develop original conventions due to the locations being modern and ordinary. The park is a public area which will allow the audience to achieve a familiarity with the video. The location of the house is also a similar setting although it is personal and unique filming in a house increased the audience’s familiarity of the video. The settings also highlights to the reader that the artist is not superficial and this creates a relationship between the audience and the artist to the audience as they believe they are similar to themselves. Mise en scene used in the music video involves the original conventions for example costume. The costume which my group chose to use is informal which has kept to original conventions, although we used different costumes for each member of the band to portray different personalities, the costume followed the same theme of colour this was to form a trademark for the band. Props also followed original conventions as they are very simple for example umbrella that has connotations of the weather and the mirror of vanity instruments also highlight that the band are musically talented. The type of clothes that are used signify the feminity of the girl in the video however when they are thrown this highlights that she has a lower status. We decided to change the music video from the original plan as we believed it was much too complex for the audience to understand. The genre of the record that we chose to use was rock the way in which we filmed our music video was coherent to the genre due to the video involving a dark abusive story between the man and a woman. A selection of shots used in the music video was inspired by the promotional package of Kings of Leon Use Somebody which incorporates band performance. The digipak and poster are coherent with the genre of the promotional package due to the simplicity of the digipak and poster. The digipak integrates the effect of black and white which signifies mystery this articulates the theme of the musical promotional package and genre as it is a convention of rock music. However the use of grey tones used in the digipak and poster challenge conventions of rock promotional packages as they are usually much darker and more abstract. Rock promotional packages usually avoid using photos of the band and more artistic images are used with the name of the band and album in bold and is very simple however we chose to challenge this by using the bands logo for the font to articulate the trademark.

This is the first example of how the video Use Somebody by Kings Of Leon influenced our music video. They used similar shots and affects when filming the band performance.

This shows a close up shot of both singers (the singer of Kings Of Leon and the singer of Parazali.) However the Kings Of Leon video looks brighter than the Parazali video giving the Parazali video a less professional look.

This shows a black and white shot of only the drummer we used this in our music video as we wanted to develop the image of each member of the band through the music video.

This shows that the mimer looks at the camera with a close up shot this shows that they are singing to the audience.

This is a video of a commentary which explains the reasons we decided to include things in the music video.

The music video and the ancillary texts work extremely well together as we have used the band in the music video and on the digipak and poster. We also are more familiar with the band knowing who they are from the music video. This has allowed us to carry on the same theme throughout which is that they both look mysterious. The lead singer of the band is also holding his face on the digipak which is coherent with the female actress in the music video due to her crying and being the victim. They are both similar as they are both hold prominent parts . The sunset used on the back of the digipak suggests a desolate area which is similar to the mood in the park however the sunset suggests beauty which the music video does not portray. The simplicity of the digi pak and the video has made the promotional package work well and look more professional although it is less eye catching it follows the genre of the record. In both the digipak and music video the same props appear for example the instruments this carries on the theory that the band is musically talented. The artwork that has been used on the poster was repeated on the front panel of the digipak. We decided to repeat the artwork as we wanted to create a familiarity between the poster and the digipak as this would make the digipak more recognisable.
For example:

Digipak

Music Video

This shows the similarity of actions that the dominant band member and dominant actress portray. They both look saddened which helps to emphasise the conventions of the genre due to the genre being rock. However they look different as the band member is holding his face on the digi pak although he looks upset to the audience he is actually holding his face for other reasons.

Another example:

Digi pak

Music Video

This is another example of how the digi pak and the music video are coherent. These two pictures are very similar and look as if we have used the same picture on both the music video and the digi pak. This carries on the theme that the band is musically talented. The picture above is also similar to the first picture due to the carry over of the same effect of black and white that generates a mysterious look.
Our poster and digipak were influenced by the three monkeys and the Nirvana Poster

This is the final product of the digipak

This is the final product of the poster.

This shows the decisions that we made to create the digi pak this focused on the photos and themes we should carry through.

This shows how we came to the correct decisions of what to put on the poster and fonts we all worked together to make sure we had a very eye catching poster.

The feedback we received from our promotional package is that 70% of people believed that our promotional package looked proffessional this is a positive as people believed they would see this in everyday life and that it has high quality. There was also a high response in the amount of people who believed our editing looked great and went with the beat.
50% of the people we asked also told us that they wouldnt change anything on the video however 50% is not as positive as we thought so this makes me believe that there are a few improvements that need to be made. 60% believe the actors portrayals are unbelieveable this is an example that improvements are needed to be made to the music video. The audience research supported the theory of following conventions of the genre for example location and miming. The use of the effect black and white in the music video is also seen as effective.
80% of people like the overall look of the digipak and feel that the digipak and the poster complement each other. Their favourite picture is seen to be the front cover due to its simplicity.

This pie chart highlights that people believe that the video does looks professional.

This pie chart shows that the music video needs some improvements I believe this is because the music video needs to be made more believable.

This pie chart shows that people believe having a mimer and band footage works this works as it shows a story also increases the entertainment of the music video for example in Use Somebody. The mimer is used to highlight the emotions of the song.

Ali Robertson

As I have said before in the video interview I believe it is a positive idea that the ancillary task and video relate by using simple techniques. I would say addition to that I love the music video and the miming of James which is in it I feel sympathetic for the character which Lucy plays.

Ashley Shaw

The promotional package is very suitable to this genre as I am a fan of this type music I find this very appealing.

Joe Thomas

I believe that the promotional package is brilliant and I really enjoy the story of the video only improvement that I would say is that the actors portrayals should be better.

Lucy Cowper

I believe that the ancillary tasks and video worked very well it was a pleasure for me to take part in the video. The group always worked very proffessionally and I believe it has been created successfully.

Alex Booth

I believe that the promotional package looks great I love the band footage this has made it very proffessional. I would watch the video again and this would persuade me to buy the cd if the single was available.

Taslima Rahman

I love the poster I feel that it is very imaginative and appealing to the eye. I think the sunset stands out which makes the poster unique.

This video is of Laura Edwards she thinks positively of the music video and tells the audience that the video looks proffesional and that the plot is clear. She believes there could be a few changes to be made to the video with acting and characters portrayals to make it more believeable.

This video is of Alistar Robertson who speaks positively of the digipak in the video he believes that the ancillary products relate as they both use black and white images. The way they are dressed supports the similarity between the two. He feels like this is a good idea as it follows the conventions of the band and fits in nicely with the genre.

The promotional package used a various of different forms of media technologies to present the music video, digipak and poster. The creativity that was implied when using media technologies helped the promotional package portray a professional image.
The forms of media technology that we first used was the camera and the tripod which we used several times. This was used to increase the steadiness and the variation of camera shots. This form of media technology was crucial in constructing the video as this is the dominating product of the package. The use of the camera came at ease due to much practise last year. The camera needed to have several precautions put into place before we began to film such as: to protect the camera with an umberella this is a premilinary action due to not having to involve this before due to the weather being much better we also had to remove distractions and unneccessary equipment in the setting that we filmed in. We also used a JIB and a track when filming the music video this generated interesting shots such as tracking shot, match on action and the panning shot. The forms of media technology that we used to supplement the editing of the music video was Adobe Premier Pro CS3. This enabled us to capture the footage that we shot and to add the song which helped us to correct the miming and to increase the accuracy in relation to the footage. Adobe Premier Pro enabled us to secure that the footage is matched correctly to the beat of the record and to improve the continuity of the music video.
The forms of media technology that we used when creating the digipak and poster was a Canon Powershot Camera this give us the chance to take a wide variety of proffessional different pictures to illustrate the digipak and poster. The Canon Powershot Camera enabled us to take pictures at the highest quality to ensure a very proffessional look to the promotional package. We used the camera once as we only needed to use it in a short period of time.
When capturing the photographs we used a memory card which was already a property of the camera this held the amount of pictures and helped us to transfer them by a USB cable with ease. The digipak and poster were then produced on Premier Photoshop which helped us generate different effects on the pictures to make the digipak look more eye catching and appealing to the audience. The features we used to do this was to apply the saturation on the photograph and the feather tool which helped us create the poster.

This is the camera which we used this was used to develop creative proffessional shots this was a very crucial piece of equipment as it filmed the whole music video.
This is the programme Adobe Premier Pro which we used to edit the music video this allowed us to make fine adjustments to our music video and allowed us to be creative using effects.
